Well you won’t find it here, because it’s all bullsh*t.

This year:

➡️ Beige is out, but 80s brown is in.

➡️ Move on from midcentury modern and embrace maximalism, but don’t make it too gaudy.

➡️ Is it color capping or color drenching that’s all the rage?

➡️ Boucle is officially passe, but jewel tones, banquettes, and wallpaper are back?

Listen…they never left. And that’s the problem with these cyclical trends.

What’s hot for spring is dead by fall, and come January you’ll have a whole new crop of professional word salad to tell you what to trash and what to buy. Hell, against my better judgment, I’ve even been roped into the scheme of trend forecasting for press knowing full well I’d one day be sitting here eating crow.

But here’s a hill I’m willing to die on: trends don’t matter.

What’s most important when designing your home is an authentic sense of self that translates into every fabric, paint color, and piece of furniture. And that will never develop by hopping on and off the merry go round of latest crazes pumped out by your favorite magazine.

So heres my advice: tune out that noise and dial in to your own sense of excitement about the things you love in literature and fashion, cinema or science, nature and art.

For instance, I designed a Mad Hatter meets Tom of Finland meets Salvador Dali Manhattan apartment, and a Brooklyn dining room inspired by the grand Old World cathedrals and their mesmerizing stained glass windows.

The creative process is a personal journey and it shouldn’t be clouded by current fads which will only leave you with deep insecurity and a crippling case of whiplash.

If you take one thing away from this public service announcement it’s this:

Don’t feel pressured to make a long term investment driven by the opinions of people who know nothing about you, myself included. Consider balance, comfort, longevity, and quality and you’ll never go wrong.
