PRO TIP: Recessed lighting is NOT the enemy.

Just don’t use the ones your contractor recommends. And quit calling them ‘cans’. We’re not shopping for cranberry sauce.

Recessed lighting gets such a bad rap. And some designers will even tell you that you don't need them. They're ugly. Harsh. Lack charm. And you shouldn't use them.

Well I'm not one of those designers.

Planned early and considered thoughtfully, recessed lighting can work wonders to create a layered atmosphere in your home.

We don't specify those 5" pancakes your contractor will likely recomend. Those will make your house look like an airport.

Instead, we use fixtures 3" or less in diameter. This is one occasion when smaller is better.

And we avoid placing lights on a grid layout, a telltale sign of poor design. You're not outfitting a Walmart supercenter. Fixtures should be positioned judiciously. Place the light where you need it, like highlighting items of significance, or unique surfaces, for wayfinding and safety on stairs and in hallways, and for areas where regular tasks are completed like over countertops or bathroom vanities.

And dimmers: non-negotiable. Use them!
