We reconfigured the layout of this primary bathroom for a number of reasons.

As a developer-delivered house, the space was not customized for any singular end user, which meant all of the finishes were generic and none of the space allocations were correct.

The water closet, which housed only a toilet, was twice as large as the shower stall. And the tub was 4.5 feet long —unusable by any grown adult, and certainly not by our client who is 6'3."

And since our client is a couple who travels regularly and is accustomed to staying in five-star hotels, they wanted top come home to a space that felt just as luxurious and inviting, and the builder selected brown porcelain tiles and multicolored mosaic border trim wasn't going to cut it.

It all had to go.

We removed the architecturally incongruous ceiling vault above the window and took the space down to its studs. This renovation was no small feat. It required relocation of HVAC components, reconfiguration of plumbing, and even annexing space from an adjacent room.

PRO TIP: Always plan for a contingency equivalent to 15% of your project budget. You never know what you'll find once you start opening walls.

I designed a custom leathered marble sink with two faucets to combine previously seperate vanities into a single location that would take advantage of outdoor views. Suspended illuminated mirrors hang above to meet functional demands and create visual balance around the window.

An expanded 11' x 6' glass-enclosed wet room lined in handmade, ribbed Japanese tile now contains a proper soaking tub and triple shower setups from Waterworks.

And the burning question everyone wants answered: how much did this renovation cost?

Project investments can vary wildly depending on your desired level of finish, location, and quality of labor you retain. This project clocked in around $600/sq ft, including products and construction, but excluding design fees. Given this project is in Houston, TX, it sits on the lower end of the cost spectrum of luxury bathroom renovations we design. If you're in a place like Boston, New York, Miami or Los Angeles (especially with the square footage of this space), you can easilt expect your renovation to be 40-60% higher.
