Like a bespoke
garment that
accentuates
every curve
Channeling the punctuated palette and lush textures of a 1910 Henri Rousseau painting
hanging in MoMA just a short walk away, a 47th-story Manhattan pied-à-terre flaunts its own collection of captivating art in an eclectic setting with enviable views.

The grand proportions and perhaps
intentionally exhibitionist-scaled windows
of this six-story, new construction townhouse
extended an invitation to theater and to
the curiosity of voyeuristic passersby.

The living room doubles as lounge and gallery, where works by Michaela Eichwald, Kaari Upson and Goshka Macuga hold court. Soaring, wall-to-wall millwork punctuated with brass shelving and heavily-veined Golden Spider marble quarried in Greece backdrops sculptural furnishings upholstered in mohair and bouclé
The vernacular of the grand cathedrals of Gaudí and the Byzantine Empire and the architecture of medieval monasteries informed the contemplative mood of the dining room. Stuart Haygarth's celestially evocative, illuminated orb composed of individually strung elements collected from walks along the beach recalls the ethereal, atmospheric quality of intricate stained-glass windows. Below, a custom designed dual pedestal table stands like an altar in the shifting shadows of dappled light filtered through wool sablé woven sheers.

Harmonic hues and rich materiality of silk, straw marquetry and slubbed linen swathe the surfaces of the primary suite where Massimiliano Locatelli's neon coil chandelier floats in counterpoint to the restrained formality of the space. A geometric, metallic tile fireplace surround focuses an wall of wardrobes faced in smoked acrylic and wire mesh.

In the office at the apex of the residence, where dual roof terraces and a skylight illuminate blackened oak millwork, an immense mixed media assemblage by Frieda Toranzo Jaeger surmounts an elegant divan for repose.

Formerly a home office, the secondary bedroom's tweed upholstered headboard backs a cerused oak rollaway bed and nightstands to mask mechanical systems and house top loading storage compartments. Traditional swing closet doors were replaced with a full-height bronze-mirrored barn door which serves double duty to visually expand the proportions of the space and ease access and movement throughout.

Interior Design + Architectural Advisory
While blessed with abundant natural light and sweeping views, this condominium required a refreshed vision and architectural interventions to elevate the client's standard of living. We pared it down to its studs, designed custom furniture and millwork, devised an improved lighting plan and curated modern finishes to reimagine a crisply composed city escape for its out-of-town owners and their frequent house guests.
Typical of most high-rise NYC apartments, exposed, bulky HVAC units populated most rooms, occupying valuable floor space and limiting the use of freestanding furniture. Additionally, concrete ceilings restricted opportunities for overhead lighting. We enacted a plan to elegantly resolve these conditions while also complying with the building's rigid approvals and documentation process.
