Interior Design + Architectural Advisory
While blessed with abundant natural light and sweeping views, this condominium required a refreshed vision and architectural interventions to elevate the client's standard of living. We pared it down to its studs, designed custom furniture and millwork, devised an improved lighting plan and curated modern finishes to reimagine a crisply composed city escape for its out-of-town owners and their frequent house guests.
Typical of most high-rise NYC apartments, exposed, bulky HVAC units populated most rooms, occupying valuable floor space and limiting the use of freestanding furniture. Additionally, concrete ceilings restricted opportunities for overhead lighting. We enacted a plan to elegantly resolve these conditions while also complying with the building's rigid approvals and documentation process.

Channeling the punctuated palette and lush textures of a 1910 Henri Rousseau painting
hanging in MoMA just a short walk away, a
47th-story Manhattan
pied-à-terre flaunts its own collection of captivating art in an eclectic setting with enviable Hudson River views.

Raymond Hendler's monumental abstract expressionist canvas, one of a full suite of works we curated for the residence, announces an unfussy yet confident mood in the home's foyer. We designed the open cantilevered shelving to hang in lieu of freestanding furniture, highlighting the newly laid expanse of wide plank white oak flooring and custom baseboards.

Evoking the reclining nudes of the Rousseau painting, a custom leather banquette remedies the dining area's unique proportions. The bronze pedestal table, also an MHLI commission, conjures a grove of mature trees. Its rhythmic base mirrors the forest of conifers depicted in Toshio Shibata's vivid photograph hanging above, testament to our penchant for incorporating art as part of the interior narrative.

Rounded silhouettes and repeating circular motifs soften the harsh rectilinearity of the long, narrow living room where a curated a mix of pedigreed vintage pieces and contemporary furnishings inject a sense of playfulness to curb formality. A custom velvet window seat with integrated terrazzo end tables and low storage maximizes seating and masks an unsightly HVAC unit. As a finishing detail, a custom bronze TV frame shields unsightly power cables from view.

Get your best sleep.
Live your best life.
We make superior living simpler, smarter, and unmistakably better so you can rest easy.

Formerly a home office, the secondary bedroom's tweed upholstered headboard backs a cerused oak rollaway bed and nightstands to mask mechanical systems and house top loading storage compartments. Traditional swing closet doors were replaced with a full-height bronze-mirrored barn door which serves double duty to visually expand the proportions of the space and ease access and movement throughout.

Creamy neutrals and powder blues extend vistas from the horizon into the primary bedroom to establish an aura of calm amidst the grit of the city. A built-in dressing table makes use of an awkward corner where Gastone Rinaldi's sumptuous, silk velvet upholstered armchair strikes a note of Old Hollywood glamour as counterpoint to an Ann Purcell color blocked abstract painting.
