Despite these desirable amenities, the client was stumped by the apartment's confusing floorplan and awkward corners, especially in the primary bedroom where he had cobbled together a solution of mismatched furniture to address storage, workspace and sleeping functions.

OUR DESIGN GOALS:
Develop a comprehensive optimized storage plan
Integrate the client's adventurous sense of color
Bring cohesion to furnishings
Ease navigation through the space
Prioritizing the client's requirement for ample storage, we took inspiration from precisely appointment cabins aboard sailing vessels and conducted exhaustive studies to optimise the seemingly unusable portions of the space in a manner that would elegantly serve the varied needs within the room.
We designed a series of built-ins to occupy each niche in place of freestanding furniture, including shelving units, wardrobes and a zig-zagging desk and dresser system with strategically calibrated angles to fit large items and ease passage along the bedroom's corridor. We also removed an existing closet and swing door and reconceived it as a secondary amroire with low space for hanging clothing, a TV niche above and upper cabinets to store luggage and off-season gear. And to top it all off: our signature perforated metal valences to veil motorized shades at each window.
We extended the materiality of the floor onto the vertical plane to unify the new cabinetry and components and to visually expand the room's proportions. The wainscoting becomes the headboard with integrated outlets and bedside sconces. We also designed the platform bed with accessible storage below for the client's massage table, along with streamlined, cantilvered bronze nightstand with suspended drawers that were later eliminated.

IMPLEMENTATION
Working closely with the contractor and millworker, we remained actively engaged at the site for the duration of construction, specifying placement of decorative knobs and pulls, approving wood samples to perfectly match the existing floor color, advising on integrated light fixtures and ensuring all design details were executed to perfection.
